评价历史人物不是一件容易的事，很多时候，同时代甚至身边的人我们都看不清楚，何况相隔了十几个朝代的古人。文物年代久了，会蒙上灰尘、披上锈迹或者挂上包浆，人物也是如此，只不过蒙在他们身上的是由史书记载、小说戏曲、民间传说等共同编织的“历史的面纱”。

曹操的面纱可真够厚的，原因并不复杂。不论是作为政治家、军事家还是文学家，曹操都太出色了。历史学家、小说家、剧作家、普通百姓都关注他，结果，一千个人讲故事，就会讲出一千个曹操，反倒把真正的曹操给淹没了。从成书于西晋的《三国志》，到金元时代的杂剧，再到元末明初的《三国演义》，曹操逐渐由一个叱咤风云的英雄变成了一个阴险狡诈的奸臣。

对曹操形象伤害最大的就是《三国演义》第四回，曹操刺杀董卓未遂，与陈宫一起逃至成皋，投宿在其父的结义兄弟吕伯奢家。因曹操多疑，误以为吕伯奢要加害自己，便将其一家九口尽数杀掉，还对陈宫说了一句让人背后冒凉气的话：“宁教我负天下人，休教天下人负我。”

《三国演义》的这段内容在正史中找不到依据，《三国志》中没有记载，南朝裴松之为《三国志》作注，引用了孙盛《杂记》的记载，原文是：“太祖闻其食器声，以为图己，遂夜杀之。既而凄怆曰：‘宁我负人，毋人负我！’”这一条史料（我们权且把它当作史料）最接近《三国演义》的情节，但是曹操也只是在发现自己杀错了人之后悲怆地说“宁我负人，毋人负我”，这里的“宁”是“难道”的意思，如“王侯将相，宁有种乎？”译成现代汉语就是：“难道是我对不起人家？不是人家对不起我啊！”罗贯中在曹操原话的基础上，加了六个字，就变成了“宁教我负天下人，休教天下人负我”。至此，曹操的人设彻底崩塌，这真是历史的无奈。

曹操的人设崩塌了，但“宁教我负天下人，休教天下人负我”这句话却作为成语流传下来，被用来指极端冷酷自私的处事态度。《新时代汉英大词典》的解释是：Better I betray the people than let the people betray me。罗慕士的翻译是：Better to wrong the world than have it wrong me! 如果放在情境和上下文中，似乎罗慕士的翻译更合适一些。

鲁迅先生在评价魏晋人物时说过这样一句话：“曹操是一个很有本事的人，至少是一个英雄。我虽不是曹操一党，但无论如何，总是非常佩服他。”那么，曹操心目中的英雄是什么样？他又是如何评价自己的呢？

《三国演义》第二十一回，曹操与刘备煮酒论英雄，他先是把英雄比作龙：“龙能大能小，能升能隐：大则兴云吐雾，小则隐介藏形；升则飞腾于宇宙之间，隐则潜伏于波涛之内。方今春深，龙乘时变化，犹人得志而纵横四海。龙之为物，可比世之英雄。”

罗慕士译文：

"The dragon," Cao continued, "can enlarge and diminish itself, surge aloft or lie beneath the surface of the water. Enlarged, it creates clouds and spews mist. Diminished, it can veil its scaly form from view. Aloft, it prances triumphant in the upper realm of space. Under the surface, it lurks among the surging breakers. Now in the fullness of spring it mounts the season, like men who would fulfill an ambition to dominate the length and breadth of the land. In this respect the dragon can well be compared to the heroes of the age."

龙是中国人想象中的动物，究竟长什么样，谁也没有见过。曹操用龙来比喻英雄，很玄；罗慕士的翻译，在外国读者眼里也一定很玄。其实，莫不如直接告诉读者，英雄就像龙一样，能屈能伸，能升能隐，得志时能成就事业，失意时能隐忍以待时机。当然，如果真的这样做，那就不是翻译，而是改写了。

随后，曹操说出了他心目中的英雄：“夫英雄者，胸怀大志，腹有良谋，有包藏宇宙之机，吞吐天地之志者也。”玄德曰：“谁能当之？”操以手指玄德，后自指，曰：“今天下英雄，惟使君与操耳！”

罗慕士译文：

"What defines a hero is this: a determination to conquer, a mine of marvelous schemes, an ability to encompass the realm, and the will to make it his." "Who merits such a description?" Xuande asked. Cao pointed first to Xuande, then to himself. "The heroes of the present day," he said, "number but two -- you, my lord, and myself."

原文是一个排比句，罗慕士的译文也采用了同样的句式，铿锵有力，一气呵成。再从英文翻译回中文：“所谓英雄，就是有征服战胜的决心、层出不穷的计谋、经天纬地的才干、雄霸天下的意志”，与原文相契合。

刘备问曹操谁能称得上英雄，曹操的答复是：“惟使君与操耳！”（"The heroes of the present day," he said, "number but two -- you, my lord, and myself."）这里需要注意一下“使君”二字的翻译。“使君”是东汉时期人们对刺史和州郡长官的尊称，因刘备曾担任左将军、豫州牧，所以也被称为刘豫州或刘使君。既然使君是个尊称，而非职务，译成英文最恰当的就是my lord，相当于中文里的“阁下”。

曹操认为自己是英雄，那是他不矫情；他称刘备为英雄，那是他慧眼识人。曹操还曾毫不掩饰地夸赞过孙权：“生子当如孙仲谋”（《三国志·吴书·吴主传》裴松之注，《三国演义》第六十一回）。这样由衷地称赞自己的对手，小肚鸡肠的人能做得到吗？曹操的这句话，被南宋词人辛弃疾直接引用在了《南乡子·登京口北固亭有怀》中：

何处望神州。

满眼风光北固楼。

千古兴亡多少事，悠悠。

不尽长江滚滚流。

年少万兜鍪。

坐断东南战未休。

天下英雄谁敌手。曹刘。

生子当如孙仲谋。

建安十五年（公元210年），曹操五十六岁。他写了一篇题为《让县自明本志令》的文章，回顾了自己的志向和经历。他说：“身为宰相，人臣之贵已极，意望已过矣。今孤言此，若为自大，欲人言尽，故无讳耳。设使国家无有孤，不知当几人称帝，几人称王！”除了酒后吹牛，有几个人敢于用这样的口吻讲话？可曹操敢，因为他有这个底气。

为了成就霸业，曹操不可能不玩弄权术和诡计，可话说回来，刘备、孙权、袁绍，哪一个不是耍心眼儿的高手？只不过曹操比他们更有能力，更会写诗，手腕权术搞得更加高端大气上档次而已。易中天先生在《品三国》中称曹操为“可爱的奸雄”，我很赞同，至少，他是一个有血有肉有性情的“奸雄”，比那些只“奸”不“雄”的人强出不知几百倍。
